Overview

The Explorer has been refined and restyled for 2002. This mid-size SUV is now slightly longer and wider and now has an optional third row seat, bringing seating capacity to seven. Ford has maintained the four Explorer trim lines: XLS, XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited. However, the all-wheel drive option has been dropped, leaving just the 2-wheel and 4-wheel drive models. The rigid rear suspension of last year has been replaced with a new independent rear suspension on all models. Other equipment changes include standard 16-inch wheels and tires, an optional 240 horsepower V8 engine, and an optional side-impact airbag system designed to protect both the first and second row passengers. New exterior color combinations are also available.
