Overview

Ford has entered the small SUV market with the all-new 2001 Escape. Available in either XLT or XLS trim, the Escape provides carlike handling with the durability and convenience of an SUV. Dual front airbags are standard, and front seat side-impact air bags are optional. Engine choices include a 2.0L 130-hp DOHC four-cylinder engine coupled with a five-speed manual transmission, or a 3.0L 200-hp twin-cam V-6 combined with a five-speed automatic transmission. Buyers can choose either front-wheel drive or a full-time automatic 4WD system. The 4WD system splits engine power evenly between the front and rear wheels. When equipped with the optional towing package, the Escape can tow up to 3500 lbs.
