Overview
This years' Protege DX has a completely new look with interior, exterior and engineering changes. Some of the interior changes include standard depowered air bags and 60/40 split fold-down rear seatbacks. Exterior changes include jewel appearing headlight reflectors, chrome accented grille and color-keyed bumpers. The most significant engineering changes come from under the hood with a new 1.6L 4 cylinder 105 hp gas engine with 107 lb of torque @ 4000 rpm. The LX comes with a new Triple-H body construction for added side impact and offset crash protection. Another change is to the four-speed automatic transmission which is lighter and shifts more smoothly. The ES has a new 1.8L 4 cylinder 122 hp gas engine with 120 lb of torque @ 4000 rpm.
