The Hyundai Sonata is all-new for 1999. A redesigned body, new engine, transmission and suspension and advanced safety features are just some of the changes made for the new year. The base Sonata gets a new 149-hp 2.4L 4-cylinder engine and while the GLS receives a 170-hp all-aluminum 2.5L V6 engine. The GL model has been dropped for 1999. The base model benefits from this change by including power windows, mirrors and door locks as standard equipment. Pricing on the GLS model has been reduced by 4.6% over a comparably equipped 1998 model. The Passenger Presence Detection System is a new safety feature that disables the passenger-side front and side air bags when a load of less then 60 pounds (33 pounds for side air bags) is in the passenger seat.
