Overview
The 1997 GTI is available in two models - GTI and GTI-VR6. Two new exterior paint colors are available, Memory Red and Windsor Blue. GTI has refined it's four-cylinder 2.0L engine by adding a modified intake cross flow cylinder head which makes for a smoother ride and and a quieter running engine. The center high mounted stop lamp was moved from the rear spoiler to the rear window. In addition to some of the other standard features like daytime running lights and anti-lock brakes, the GTI has added open door warning reflectors for all models. The VR6 GTI has a revised suspension system with tighter springs and shocks absorbers. The front end was lowered by 10mm for better reponsiveness.
