Overview
The 1997 C-Class sedan is available in three models - C230, C280 and C36 AMG. New for 1997, the C230 model replaces the C220 model. The standard five-speed automatic transmission is a new addition for these models. The ignition key transponder is a new security feature, a chip imbedded in your key is coded which eliminates duplicated keys to start the car without the unique chip. In addition, the universal garage door opener is also a new convenience feature for this model year. The high performance C36 AMG will only be available on limited production. Based on the 1996 IntelliChoice, The Complete Car Cost Guide, the Cost of Ownership Ratings for C280 is Excellent and C36 is Average. The C280 won the 1995-96 BOVY award.
