Overview
For 1997, the Explorer 4WD is offered in five trim levels - XL, Sport, XLT, Eddie Bauer and Limited. The Explorer has been the best selling Sport Utility Vehicle for the past five years. Standard on the Eddie Bauer and Limited, the 4.0L SOHC 205 horsepower engine is optional on all other models. 100,000 mile tune-up intervals are now standard with all engines. A trailer towing package is available on the Sport, Eddie Bauer and Limited. A Ford/JBL AM/FM Stereo, cassette with rear controls is available on most models. A multi-disc CD player is also optional.
