Overview

For 1997, the BMW 5-Series has been redesigned and re-introduced and is available in two models -- 528i and 540i. New features include a Digital Engine Management System and a direct ignition system with adaptive knock control. The 5-series now incorporates a microprocessor-controlled cooling system, and to create less unsprung weight, has added an aluminum (double-pivot strut in front and 4-link in the rear) suspension. The 5-series also includes an automatic tilt down passenger side mirror to aid in backing. Safety has been addressed with the introduction of side impact air bags and an impact sensor which unlocks all doors and turns on hazard and interior lights after a major accident.
