New Auto Show Season Gets Underway

As mentioned in this space a few weeks ago, the recent Frankfurt Auto Show kicked off the 2007-2008 season. For me and many of my colleagues, this means a great deal of time spent in airport waiting areas. Next up is the Tokyo Auto Show, which is considered one of the "Big Five": Frankfurt, Tokyo, Detroit, Geneva and Paris. And the Los Angeles show is gaining prominence since moving its date farther away from the Detroit show in mid-January.

For me, the Tokyo show is going to be extra-special, as I have planned some family vacation time in accord with the press days of this show. As this is the only show in the "Big Five" that has eluded me until now, I can't wait! I will be sending reports from the show floor, so look for updates on IntelliChoice.com and CNNMoney.com next month.

After Tokyo, we will hit the L.A., Detroit, Chicago and New York shows to report all the hot news. This year is shaping up to be a good one, as the industry is experiencing a tough sales year in '07 and needs new excitement to stir sales. This week, Chrysler announced a massive capital expenditure program designed to get exciting new products on the road in the next few years. Mazda has announced a special contest for aspiring car designers that will allow the winner to create the 2018 Mazda3 at the L.A. Auto Show. And these days, you can count on GM to hit us with aggressive and exciting new concepts. Remember the Camaro from the 2006 Detroit Show? Well, it will be in dealer showrooms about 12 months from now.

Yes, this is the time of year when dreams will be made and the vehicles we will be driving later this decade will be uncovered. See you there!
