Dunlop Drivers Cup
This Is What Really Matters

It is easy to get caught up in the business of the automobile business. The recent Frankfurt Auto Show kicked off the glitz and glamour season, soon to be followed by shows in Tokyo, L.A. and Detroit. Just this week we read about the marathon negotiating sessions going on in Detroit between the United Auto Workers and GM, with similar meetings at Ford and Chrysler up next. The impact and cost of emissions and oil dependency continues to climb across the U.S. And as you read in last week's entry, the recent U.S. economic credit woes are influencing what is now predicted to be a less than stellar year of sales for all the companies battling in our competitive market.
But thanks to the good people at Dunlop, I reconnected with the passion and energy that drew many of us to the automobile in the first place. They just completed their annual Dunlop Drivers Cup U.S. Regional Qualifier in anticipation of next spring's 10th Annual Drivers Cup World Final, and it blossomed into an event that changed everybody in attendance. Not only were great friendships created and memories built that previously could only be dreamed of, but it also reacquainted me with why we love this industry in the first place--it is the product, baby!
The events ranged from crawling a Toyota FJ Cruiser around a treacherous off-road course to piloting a BMW 335i coupe at 120+ mph around the track to banging a brand-new Subaru WRX through a wild and dusty rally course. Look for a full write-up on the event shortly on the IntelliChoice homepage, but for now, know that you MUST apply for this event in 2008. Yes, the Dunlop Drivers Cup is open to the general public. The only ticket required to helmet-up for its seven amazing events (race track, off-road in SUVs and ATVs, autocross, karting, motocross and rally) is an essay that defines why you should be there, and the passion and energy to back it up. Your skills will be put to the test, but endurance will also be a key ingredient for success.
Sometimes we need a little reminder on just how much fun it is to play with cars. It will always be important to "Chose your Car Wisely" and make the very best value-based decisions when buying your next new car, but in the meantime, do all you can to have fun when you drive and appreciate the freedom and excitement driving can bring you today. And now I know there is no better way to do that than to compete for the Dunlop Drivers Cup.
