Believe me. Stop what you are doing and make plans to visit your local auto mall. Well, you might have to wait a month or two until there is at least one to test at your local VW, Mercedes, Audi or BMW dealer, but drive it you must.

What am I talking about? A vehicle with a new diesel engine. Take whatever misconceptions you have about diesel and blow them out of your tail pipe. They are over. While traveling in England I was able to spend a week at the wheel of the Euro spec 2008 Volkswagen Touran TDI, and I cannot begin to express how impressed I was with this powertrain. After attending a special U.S.-spec diesel event in L.A. thanks to my friends at VW, I will write up a full review later this month...but how does 47 MPG at an average speed of 75 MPH carrying five adults and all their luggage sound? And all of this with plenty of power to spare. Trust me--diesel is no longer a dirty word.
