2008 Buick Enclave
A Minivan By Any Other Name Is Still a Minivan

Last week was a busy one and I was fortunate enough to drive a couple of vehicles that might just define current state of the art in the auto biz. Started off by driving the all-new 2008 Buick Enclave and wrapped up with time in the 2008 Toyota Highlander.
"State of the Art," you ask? Usually such high praise is held for products or ideas that significantly "move the needle" from the current to the future. While neither of these vehicles should be considered highly exciting or revolutionary, they absolutely bulls-eye the burgeoning crossover segment target.

Just in case you are not 100% clear on just what a crossover vehicle is, I suggest clicking over to the great write-up on our home page in the Latest Car Features section. But first, please know that this market is going to get even more competitive, which is perfect for you as the consumer, if these two new vehicles are a fair representation of the near-future.
Due to press embargo limitations, I cannot pass on driving impressions or a full review of either today. (Stay tuned in June!) But I can tell you that these are wonderful vehicles that deliver all of the utility and ease that a minivan promises-without being a minivan. The crossover of the future delivers more than enough comfortable and easy-to-access seating in a smooth and quiet shell that in certain cases may rival the experience of a traditional luxury brand vehicle. Yet powerful and efficient engines (and in the case of the Highlander, a hybrid option) coupled with available all-wheel-drive systems and wrapped up in semi-aggressive "off-roader" suits reminded me that these were built to appeal to the SUV crowd.
By no means am I calling for the death of the minivan--or the truck-based classic SUV. But once you get your hands on one of these vehicles, you will surely ask why anyone would choose last week's news.
