The new Ford Mondeo might be THE story of the 2007 Geneva Auto Show. I know what you are thinking - the show opens to the Press at 2:00 AM Eastern Standard Time on Tuesday AM, and I am writing to you at 5:30 PM EST on Monday. A bold statement, perhaps? Or more importantly, just the "Bold Move" Ford U.S.A. must be very jealous that their European counterparts are able to make well and often.
The 2007 Mondeo is not a revolutionary vehicle. But when seen in the context of Ford North America, it is difficult to trust the sincerity of the blue oval on the front of this new Mondeo. It is a compelling and contemporary design that collected Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volvo comparisons at this evening's critical pre-press event. Following are other traits called out tonight... possible to mention in the same breath as the "new" Taurus presented in Chicago last month?

"Limousine-like comfort... soft touch and high-quality materials all around... acclaimed driving dynamics... traffic adaptive cruise control... twin-screen LCD driver/passenger information systems... "Easyfuel" capless refueling system... cohesive, aggressive, and most importantly, interesting style elements inside and out." These words used to describe the new Euro Mondeo are exactly the type any and all new U.S. Fords need to climb back on to the common consumer's consideration list.
There has been a lot of bad news out of Dearborn lately, but great product has an uncanny way of saving perspectives and fortunes. Bold Moves? I just experienced yet another one here in Geneva... but the clock is ticking in Michigan. I met with the Product Manager for the Mondeo this evening and when I mentioned the word "Taurus", he quickly slinked away. Can this really be the same company?
