2007 Lexus GS 450h Auto Show Photo

Lexus has already established the third-generation GS sedan range as a serious player in the enthusiast luxury sedan category, against formidable competitors from Audi, BMW, Infiniti, and Mercedes. Now with V-6, V-8, and AWD models, the GS covers the full segment. In spring 2006, the GS will blaze new frontiers, offering the first hybrid luxury car and the first rear-drive hybrid. In doing so, the GS will adhere to the same model positioning philosophy as with the RX400h sport/utility vehicle - put the hybrid at the top of the range with more features and power than the second-best model. While final numbers are yet to be released, Lexus announced that the 450h will boast more than 300 horsepower, enabling 0-60 mph sprints under six seconds. The powertrain teams a 3.5L V-6 engine with a permanent magnet electric motor, creating the motive force attributed to larger engines in the segment. The math breaks down to simply: V-8 power with four-cylinder fuel economy. In a year, the marketplace will judge if this adds up to a runaway success.
