2006 Porsche Cayenne Auto Show Photo

While Porsche proudly displayed its mighty Cayenne Turbo, the SUV news of the show was the German sports-car specialist announcing production intent for a Cayenne hybrid by the end of the decade. The drive system is being co-developed with Volkswagen, and it will likely see service in the Touareg and Audi Q7, as well. Following the full-hybrid concept, the VW/Porsche system will team traditional a gasoline engine with an electric motor that can work independently or together as load demands. Porsche claims the system will improve fuel economy by 15 percent, though the underlyng message was that it would also improve performance. Unofficially, we've heard that Porsche likes the BMW model for the U.S. market, thinking that a smaller Boxstered Cayenne could work in the same way the X3 works with the X5.
