2007 Volkswagen Golf

The good news that Volkswagen announced at the 2006 Chicago Auto Show is that it has decided it will sell basic versions of its fifth-generation Golf hatchback (launched here in the mid-‘70s as the “Rabbit”) in both three- and five-door versions. The not-so-good news is that VW’s 150-horsepower 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine is the only choice. You can pick between a five-speed manual or a six-speed Tiptronic automatic, and standard equipment include ABS braking, traction control, active front headrests, front and rear curtain airbags, front side bags, manual climate control and remote locking with anti-theft control. Pricing will be announced closer to its summer launch, but base sticker price for the 2007 Volkswagen Golf will be about $16,000, or about $5k less than the sporty GTI with its superior 2.0-liter FSI engine.
