Volkswagen Passat Wagon Auto Show Photo

The Passat Variant--a.k.a. the Passat Wagon to us Yanks--made its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, giving us a glimpse of what's to come this spring when the estate version of VW's sixth-generation sedan arrives in the U.S. While VW showed eight different engines for the Passat Wagon--including a 2.0-liter/170-hp turbodiesel with a Piezo unit injector--the brand will offer just two powerplants, at least initially, in the states. No slouch, the base engine will be VW's peppy 2.0-liter, 197-hp FSI turbo four-cylinder, with a 3.6-liter/280-hp V-6 available as the top-tier motivator. Both a six-speed manual and a six-speed direct-shift gearbox (DSG) will be offered, as will 4Motion all-wheel drive. The new wagon is longer, wider, and taller than its predecessor, and thus offers more cargo and passenger room, making it a prospective minivan alternative in the U.S. Speaking of minivans, the wagon features several minivan-esque innovations, including integrated child seats, an electric tailgate, and a bicycle carrier system that mounts onto two pins in the rear bumper.
