2007 Volkswagen Golf R32 Auto Show Photo

Whether you view the GTI as too fast or too slow, Volkswagen now has just the pocket-rocket for you. VW unveiled two new flavors of its Golf hatchback--the mild GT and the spicy R32--that flank the GTI, giving consumers three hot-hatch options. While it's less likely the U.S. will get the GT (unfortunate, seeing that it sports VW's innovative, 170-hp, supercharged and turbocharged Twincharger four-cylinder), it's a near certainty the R32 will return to America--after all, VW needs a performance icon to take on the likes of the Subaru STi and the Mitsubishi Evo. To battle those wasabi-infused Asians, the R32 will again get a 3.2-liter V-6 (now up to 250 hp) mated to a standard six-speed manual or VW's trick dual-clutch direct-shift gearbox (DSG), either of which routs power to a permanent 4Motion four-wheel-drive system. To differentiate the R32 from lesser Golfs, it's fitted with more aggressive bodywork, 18-inch wheels, and twin tailpipes; inside, unique gauges, racing-style sport seats, and aluminum pedals do the setting apart. Look for the R32 to go on sale in the U.S. possibly as early as fall 2006.
