There’s more to this elegant two-door coupe than initially meets the eye thanks to a creatively designed three-piece retractable hardtop that converts the Astra to a cabrio at the touch of a button in less than 30 seconds, while still allowing convenient access to more than 200 liters (7 cubic feet) of storage space in the trunk (twice that with the top up). Comparable to most midsize coupes, the Astra measures in at 177 inches long, and Opel claims there is comfortable room in that back seat for two adults “even for long journeys.” Buyers may choose between four gasoline engines offering from 105 to 200 horsepower, a 1.9-liter/150-hp common rail diesel engine, or step up to the top-of-the-line 2.0-liter/200-hp Ecotec turbo that promises top speeds above 140 mph, when it arrives in European dealerships in spring 2006.
