Ford Focus C-MAX H2-ICE Auto Show Photo

With its debut of the Focus C-MAX H2-ICE concept, Ford can now claim to be the only vehicle manufacturer to be in serious development on four different fuel technologies: clean diesels and hybrids, and now, hydrogen-powered internal-combustion engines and fuel cells. Developed at the Ford Research Center in Aachen, Germany, the C-MAX H2-ICE is powered by a hydrogen-powered internal-combustion engine, which stores its fuel -- compressed gaseous hydrogen - in three tanks with a combined 31.4-gallon capacity that offers a driving range of about 125 miles. A mechanical supercharger enables the vehicle to have similar performance to the corresponding 2.3-liter/110-hp four-cylinder gasoline engine found in a standard Focus. Ford says it believes hydrogen is the key alternative fuel of the future, and hopes hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered vehicles may be the ultimate solution; the C-MAX H2-ICE prototype is their first step toward that goal.
