2006 Chevrolet Matiz Auto Show Photo

2006 Chevrolet Matiz

A Mini Cooper looks gigantic parked next to Chevrolet's 2005 Matiz, due to go on sale in Europe this April. Built by GM Daewoo Auto and Technology in Korea, the Matiz is the smallest car ever sold by Chevrolet, just 3.5 meters long. The Matiz is perfect for Europe's narrow streets, impossible parking and high fuel costs. The four-seater is offered with choice of two gas engines: a 0.8-liter/52-horse three-cylinder and a 1.0-liter/66-horse four-cylinder, both available with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The cheeky Matiz sports a smiley-face grille and cherubic short overhangs, but standard gas-charged shocks and anti-lock brakes give it street cred. Mind you, the Matiz isn't for the impatient; equipped with the 0.8-liter base three-cylinder, the shortie blazes from zero to 60 mph in 18.2 seconds. The Matiz is the object of litigation in China as the just announced Chery QQ that auto entrepreneur (and importer of Yugos, among other cars) Malcolm Bricklin plans to export to the U.S. in a year or two is practically identical to the Matiz.
