2006 BMW 130i Auto Show Photo

Imagine a rear-drive Golf sized hatchback with a top speed of 155 mph and the ability to accelerate to 60 mph in about 6.0 seconds. Well, you're looking at it. The 1 Series is BMW's entry-level model in Europe, and until now, it has been exclusively four-cylinder powered. But BMW engineers simply couldn't resist stuffing in the all-new 3.0L/255-hp straight six from the next-gen 3 Series under the hood, along with a six-speed manual transmission and new 17-inch alloy wheels. The result is not only impressive performance, but respectable fuel economy. BMW claims the 130i returns about 30 mpg on the European combined test cycle. The five-door 130i hatchback is not coming to the U.S., but BMW has a four door sedan 1 Series under development that is intended for North American markets. And with that 3.0-liter six under the hood, it could be quite a car.
