Alfa Romeo 159 Auto Show Photo

Alfa Romeo used the Geneva show to launch two brand-new cars on a unique and sophisticated base called the 'Premium' platform. This one is a high-quality sedan of VW Passat size, the 159, which replaces the 156. The Premium platform was developed by a multi-national team to serve Alfa and Saab, but Saab pulled out a couple of years back. The platform comes with double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear end, and Alfa claims it can meet U.S. safety regulations. The 159 will be available with a range of engines up to a 260hp 3.2liter V-6 that's based on a GM block but uses Alfa's own cylinder heads and variable cam timing. The 159 is front drive, but all-wheel drive will be available. Transmissions are six-speed manual, with either conventional stick or Ferrari-style paddle shift, or a six-speed automatic. The 159 goes on sale in Europe this summer.
