Advice from Intellichoice: State Fees Overview

Rest assured, the government will have its hand out as soon as you buy your new car. You’ll have to pay tax as well as license and registration fees. Furthermore, you will be required to pay some combination of taxes and/or fees every year for as long as you own the vehicle.

Some states base their fees on the original price of the car and/or on its age. Others base their fees on the car’s weight. Still others have fixed fees. Then of course there's the gas guzzler tax on certain vehicles that fall below the government’s fuel economy standards.

For the IntelliChoice analysis, state fees are calculated on a state-by-state basis for each model, and these fees are aggregated into a national average. It is usually a small proportion of our overall cost of ownership calculations, but hey - we strive for accuracy.
