Advice from Intellichoice: What is a Bovy

Vehicles with just low ownership costs do not necessarily make good values. The IntelliChoice Best Overall Value of the Year (BOVY) Awards recognize those vehicles whose total cost of ownership is significantly lower than expected relative to their peer models, thus assisting consumers in making smarter purchase decisions. These vehicles are not just excellent values; they are the top-ranked models in their respective classes. While there are many factors to consider when buying a new vehicle, the annual BOVY winner list provides a quick reference to distinguish those vehicles on the market that promise the best return on investment.

The 2012 cost of ownership analysis is a careful study of over 1700 vehicles in 24 segments. As a result of an increasing number of Crossover and Luxury vehicles entering the market, two new classes were added this year, Full-Size Crossover/Wagon and Luxury Performance Car. Such diverse and thorough segmentation is utilized to ensure that you will find an award relevant to your new-vehicle search.

This year’s winners list sees the appearance of brand new vehicles such as the Buick LaCrosse eAssist sedan and Toyota Prius v crossover. These cars are an excellent example of the trend towards vehicles that strike a better balance between fuel efficiency, performance and functionality, in a larger form factor than previous generation hybrids. Other winners include the Toyota Highlander, Audi A5, Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible, and Infiniti M37. Toyota took home the most awards with a total of nine, while Chevrolet, Audi, Infiniti, and Lexus also won multiple accolades.

The BOVY list for 2012 can be viewed at www.intellichoice.com/2-7/best-car-value-awards.html (new winners are posted each year in early February). To review specific cost areas and make trim-to-trim comparisons, simply click the Ownership link on any vehicle buyer’s guide.
