New for 2006, Toyota introduces its line of Highlander Hybrid's. The Highlander Hybrid is available in four models: base and Limited in 2WD or 4WD configurations. All models are powered by a combination of a 3.3L V6 engine and high-torque electric drive motor-generators that give it a total systems peak output of 268 horsepower. The engine and generators are mated to an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. The Highlander Hybrid has an EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 33 mpg city and 28 mpg Highway (2WD model) and 31 mpg city and 27 mpg highway (4WD model). Available for the first time in the non-luxury SUV segment, the 4WD models are equipped with an electric four-wheel-drive with intelligence.
