The Beetle hatchback returns for 2004 with several revisions. Technical changes include an improved emissions system, a new engine cover design, standard dual head/thorax airbags, and dual stage deployment in the front airbags. The OnStar Telematics Communication System is being newly offered for this year as an option on all models. Electronic stability traction control is also available optionally. The GL trim no longer offers the Cold Weather Package, now only optional on GLS models and standard on the Turbo. Starting in mid-December, the standard radio on all models will be a Premium 5.5 in dash CD player with MP3 capability. The Turbo will also receive a new 17-inch alloy wheel design late in the model year.
