For 2003, the Subaru Forester enters the model year with a new line-up. The previous L and S models have been replaced by 2.5 X and 2.5 XS models. Both Forester models introduce several functional changes such as upgraded suspension, active front seat head restraints, and front seat head/chest side impact air bags. The 2.5 XS features standard feature upgrades such as a Electronic Brake Force Distribution, a six-disc CD changer, automatic climate control, and the All Weather Package. For 2002, the Forester's drivetrain remains unchanged and features a 2.5L 165 horsepower engine coupled with a five-speed manual transmission with Subaru's Hill Holder System for safer uphill starts. A four-speed automatic transmission is optional.
