The Protege returns for the 2001 model year with several revisions. Three new models have been added, the LX 2.0, ES 2.0 and MP3. The LX and ES 2.0 are powered by an all-new 2.0L engine that offers 130 hp and 135 lb-ft of torque. The Protege MP3 adds 10 more horsepower, increasing output to 140 hp and 142 lb-ft of torque. All Protege models receive a new front grille, hood, bumper, front fenders, and headlamp combination. The interior features a new modular audio system, new seat and trim fabric, a rear lower ISO fix type child seat anchor, a glove box lock, and dual map lights (not available with moonroof models). Several upgrade packages are also available on all models except the Protege MP3.
