The 2001 Ford Explorer AWD returns this model year with minor changes. Three models are available: the XLT, Eddie Bauer and Limited. The Explorer AWD features a full-time four-wheel drive system that can automatically vary the wheel torque depending on driving conditions. When wheel slippage occurs, the system sends the majority of torque to the wheels with better traction, either front or rear. Safety features include an optional Reverse Sensing System and side-impact air bags. The Reverse Sensing System alerts drivers to objects behind the vehicle when backing up with ultrasonic sensors mounted in the rear bumper. The Ford MACH audio system, which generates 290 watts of peak power, is standard on the Eddie Bauer and Limited.
