The 1998 Volkswagen Jetta is available in six models and three different engines. A new standard feature for 1998 is the radio-frequency remote central locking system that operates a standard anti-theft alarm system, panic button and trunk release. Also new is the optional driver and front passenger side impact air bags. The Jetta is first in its class to offer side-impact air bags as an option. Standard features for all models include a remote electric trunk release, visor vanity mirrors and a lockable compartment with a padded lid. Optional equipment includes a premium radio and air conditioning (GL, GT, TDI models only) and power sunroof and anti-lock brakes (GL, GT, TDI and GLS models only).
