For 1998, Volvo introduces the debut of the V70 AWD Sportwagon family. There are three versions of the V70 platform: V70 AWD, V70 XC AWD, and the V70 R AWD. The V70 AWD and the V70 XC AWD are fitted with a 190 hp five cylinder engine with a light-pressure turbocharger. The V70 R AWD comes with a high-pressure turbocharged engine that produces 236 hp and 243 lb of torque. The AWD system automatically switches to four-wheel drive when road conditions deteriorate. Engine power is diverted to rear wheels through a transfer differential located adjacent to the transmission. Power is split to either the front or rear wheels in varying amounts as road conditions dictate. The main component that handles engine power transfer is the viscous clutch.
