The 1998 Ranger is available in four models. New for 1998, there is an increase in horsepower on the base engine and an increase in torque on the six-cylinder engine. The four-wheel drive models are now equipped with a pulse vacuum hublock system which replaces the current electronic locking hubs. This system quietly engages or disengages the front wheel hubs even at highway speeds. The steering gear is replaced with power rack and pinion steering to improve handling. In addition, new exterior changes include a restyled grille, bumpers, headlamps and taillamps. All models are now equipped with a passenger air bag with a manual deactivation switch.
