For 1997, the Cherokee Country had it+s first major change since 1985. In an attempt to not compromise what Jeep considers a proven design, the classic Cherokee design was left intact. With a budget of approximately $215 million a systematic program was introduced to implement the upgrade. The changes implemented on the interior of the Cherokee revolved around improving the appearance and the adding a passenger side air bag. The exterior was refined and a new liftgate was added. Improvements were added to the air conditioning, heating and electrical systems. By adding sound/insulation package and seals and, accompanied by engine refinement, noise, vibration and harshness (NHV) were reduced.
