The 1997 Legacy sedan is available in three full-time 4 wheel drive models - L, 2.5 GT and LSi. All Subaru vehicles feature a horizontally opposed boxer engine. The boxer, or flat engine, offers a lower center of gravity for improved vehicle stability and smoother running because of the horizontally opposed cylinder configuration. New for 1997, both the 2.2L and 2.5L engines have an increase in horsepower and torque and all models come standard with 4 wheel anti-lock brakes. The 2.5 GT now comes standard with a 5 speed manual transmission, power moonroof, fog lights and leather steering wheel. The LSi comes with leather bucket seats, CD changer and a theft deterrent system. All models feature lockable split fold down rear seats.
