The 1996 4Runner is available in five models - (Base) 2WD and 4WD, SR5 2WD and 4WD, and Limited 4WD. New for 1996, the 4Runner receives a completely redesigned body-style, engine and chassis. Both the new V6 and four-cylinder engines offer improved fuel economy and lower exhaust emission. The rear door now opens to a one-piece lift-up for improved ease of use. A soft-chip primer has been applied to front edge of hood and bumper to prevent paint damage due to chipping. Standard towing capacity has increased from 3,500 to 5,000 pounds (all models except four cylinder engines). The Leather Trim Package is optional on SR5 and standard on the Limited. Power and Convenience Package are optional on base models and standard on other models.
