The 1996 Altima is available in four models-XE, GXE, SE and GLE. New for 1996 are redesigned wheel covers for GXE and XE. Interior trim is also new for GXE. Safety features include driver and passenger-side air bags, side impact door beams, child safety locks and front and rear crumple zones. Addional safety features include, rear window defogger and available anti-lock braking system. Standard features include a 2.4L engine with dual overhead cam, power-assisted rack and pinion steering, dual power mirrors and reclining front bucket seats. Tilt steering, tinted glass and tachometer are also standard. Optional features include an automatic four-speed transmission (standard on GLE), cruise control and AM/FM stereo with cassette.
